EU Pauses Trade Retaliation Against US After Diplomatic Breakthrough
European officials suspended planned trade countermeasures against the United States following a last-minute diplomatic resolution. The TRUMP administration had threatened escalating tariffs on eight EU nations starting February 1, tied to unresolved negotiations over Greenland.
The standoff dissolved after President Trump's meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Brussels now prepares to formalize the pause of retaliatory measures originally scheduled for implementation next week.
EU Commission spokesperson Olof Gill emphasized the preference for political solutions over reciprocal trade actions. The shelved counter-tariffs WOULD have targeted signature US exports including Boeing aircraft and Kentucky bourbon.
